CELLULOSE ACETATE -
binder/resin, acetone and MEK soluble
Dissolve 1.5 oz per quart of Acetone or MEK for pressed composites; 2.5oz/qt for igniters and primes; 4.0 oz/qt for concentrated butyrate. Dries clear or can be colored with solvent dyes. One pound will make up to 4 gallons of clear binder. Highly favored by Gary Purrington.
DEXTRINE - b(C6H10O5) - yellow, powder, water soluble binder
EPOXY RESIN DER-331- Bisphenol A/Epichlorohydrin - Mix 50/50 with Versamid 140 or Versamid 253 for a room temp epoxy cure (or as per instructions using other epoxy curatives). Also used as a curative for PBAN, F17-80 polyester resin & HC434 (all CTPB) resins.
GUAR GUM - powder,
water soluble binder
Uses and properties include: Explosives industry as a waterproofing agent mixed with ammonium nitrate, nitroglycerine, etc; Guar gum is also highly economical because it has almost eight times the water-thickening ability of other agents (e.g. cornstarch) and only a small quantity is needed for producing sufficient viscosities. t is very thixotropic above 1% concentration but below 0.3% the thixotropy is slight. Excellent choice for use when granulating mixtures. A small quantity added to other water soluble binders will increase mixture viscosity and grain strength. Because less is required, costs are minimal; Guar gum is more soluble that locust bean gum due to its extra galactose branch points. Unlike locust bean gum, it is not self-gelling. Either borax or calcium can cross-link guar gum, causing it to gel. In water, it is nonionic and hydrocolloidal. It is not affected by ionic strength or pH, but will degrade at extreme pH and temperature (e.g. pH 3 @ 50 °C). It remains stable in solutions over pH range 5-7.
GUM ARABIC (acacia gum) - powder, water soluble binder
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC or Cellosize, cellulose ether) Excellent water soluble binder and tackifier/thickening agent. Excellent choice for use when granulating mixtures. Makes hard granules when as little as 4% water solution is used. A small quantity added to other water soluble binders will increase mixture viscosity and grain strength.
Rice Starch, - fine powder
Most commonly used binder in Japan, frequently called for in Shimizu's book "The Art Science and Technique". Excellent water soluble, tacky pyrotechnic binder and glue.
Rosin - (colophony
resin, pine rosin) lumpy/powder, binder, bullet casting flux
Dissolve in alcohol for greater strength solution binders. Easier to use, stronger binder
Saran Resin - [C2H2Cl2)n] Dow Chemical 506, powder, 73% chlorine donor, color flame enhancer and fuel
Soluble in MEK, cyclohexanone and slowly in Acetone. As a binder, because it dissolves slowly, it works much better if dissolved first.
Orange Shellac -200 mesh, acetone and alcohol soluble binder
Makes rich red/brown lacquer for wood. Considered superior binder in tracers, stars and other color flame mixtures.
Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) - cellulose gum powder
Water soluble, tackifier and thickening agent. Use 1% with other water soluble
binder or 2-3% by itself to increase adhesive tack and retain slurry viscosity (keeping solids suspended in slurry, such as black match slurries).
Sodium Silicate -[Na2O• 2SiO2] (water glass) - heavy, clear syrup, adhesive, fire retardant
This is the fast drying adhesive used to coat the cup set smoke balls. Simply fill with composition, insert fuse, dip in sodium silicate and roll in fine sawdust. One or two applications is all that is needed. Can be colored with food colorings. Can also be used to make rock hard tubes by applying a thin coat to the paper as the tube is rolled, and as a fire retardant to coat the inside of aerial shell cans to help prevent burning pieces that could start fires, and other device tubes to help prevent burn-through.
NITROTEK™ IGNITERCORD PLASTICIZER, tackified binder / plasticizer solution, - ORM-D
Added to pyrogen mixture for coating cotton string or wire wrapped cotton string for making Imitation Thermalite™ and other thermic Ignitercords. It is a modified nitro-plastic based slurry that coats easily and when dry, leaves the ignitercord pliable enough to bend without breaking, ignites easily and burns at high temperatures all by itself. Added to a pyrogen, it makes ignitercord hot enough to ignite raw thermite. Concentrate can be thinned with MEK if needed for use. Makes thousands of feet of ignitercord. Instructions and equipment for making Imitation Thermalite™ is in our manufacturing set FIREFOX TABLETOP MATCHMAKING STAND - Stock #TSMATCH. Non-hazmat shipping by US Mail.

VINYL RESIN SOLUTION, VERR-40 -self curing, elastomeric clear sealant - high viscosity 40% butyrate
A 40% vinyl solids loadings in MEK/Toluene solution. It has an epoxy functionality and air dries in minutes at room temperature without a curative. It is compatable with most any plasticizer for higher elongation and will adhere to most any substrate applied to permanently. It dries clear but can be colored with solvent dyes and retains a semi-soft (vinyl) texture without additional plasticizers. Excellent for use as an elastomeric sealant or a moistureproof barrier in pyrotechnics, propellant production or electronics applications. Makes an excellent wire insulation. Hundreds of uses! This thick honey-like viscosity solution can be added to solvent based paints, lacquers, etc., and can be thinned with MEK or Toluene. Very elastomeric sealant. Dries clear. You won't find this anywhere else at any price!
POLYPROPYLENE RESIN CHUNKS - Make clear, elastomeric resin. Disolves in Toluene to make solutions that dry "frosted/opaque" in color with a soft rubber-like feel to it. Can be mixed with other plastics to make them softer and more pliable (melted together and mixed for blow-molding. One pound makes 2-4 quarts of solution in toluene. Can be tinted easily with solvent dyes. Great insulation for wire and cord. Popular, inexpensive sealant and insulator!!
POLYPROPYLENE RESIN SOLUTION - Elastomeric sealant/binder. Clear thick solution in toluene, self cures to a "frosted" coloration with a rubbery feel to it when dry. Can be tinted easily with solvent dyes. Great insulation for wire and cord. Popular, inexpensive sealant and insulator!! Can be added to other solvent vehicle binders to add slight "tack" to the cured product.
POLYTYRENE RESIN -
prill or granular, dissolves in toluene to make plastic adhesive solutions
Basically plastic granules that dissolve in toluene for use as a strong plastic adhesive and sealant. Used to glue plastic aerial shell halves together and glue time fuse in place. Dries rigid and white in color. Can be tinted with solvent dies and/or made elastomeric by adding 5% or so plasticizer.
