This course was presented by Diane and Gary Purrington at the Western Pyrotechnic Association 2000 Do-It convention in Laughlin, Nevada in October of 2000. This lecture demonstrated how the less expensive PBAN polymer can be used to make improved color flame and special effects rocket propellants for small motor construction where the flame coloration is the purest, most vivid colors ever seen in pyrotechnics - truly unbeatable. Composite propellants offer higher resistance to moisture and aging, they produce higher thrust pressures with longer burn times possible than conventional black powder or sugar mixtures for spectacular high altitude flights and larger payloads. The lecture included formulations for Standard High ISP, Silver Comet, Red Flame, Blue Flame, Purple Flame and proper ignition. The hand out article also includes safety, materials, mixing, cutting grains (sizing) and heat curing (we used a 55 gallon drum with a 1500 watt ceramic heater mounted outside, forcing heated air through within). Also included is information on nozzle and bulkhead dimensions, liners, ejection charge wells and all other pertinent information to make 29mm motors from start to finish. All this information and more is packed into eight pages 8 1/2" X 11" with diagrams! Get it right the first time!
