Nitrocellulose/Polyester Fuse Coating, NC/PE thick butyrate invarious colors (see stock #'s for corresponding color), Ship ORM-D, Non-Hazmat.
Looking for a better safety fuse coating agent for use with our fuse machines, Firefox researched, experimented and came up with solutions to a couple of potential problems that standard Nitrocellulose lacquer has when coated on safety fuse. As most of us have experienced, NC lacquer can burn off ahead of the burning fuse powder core making it dangerously liabel. I have had premature device ignition caused by the flaming lacquer before the burning fuse core actually made contact with the primary composition, thus effectively eliminating the essential delay. Secondly, some NC lacquers become brittle in prolonged storage. This is most likely caused by insufficient or a complete lack of a stabilizer added to the lacquer. Aging brittle fuse will crack when bent allowing moisture in and ignition failure, especially when using in moist atmospheres or underwater. The answer is our field tested Nitrocellulose/Polyester Fuse Coating. We start with a high solids loadings NC lacquer, blend in a soluble polyester resin which improves flexability, aging and effectively reduces lacquer burnoff. Then a nitro group stabilizer is added to guard against decomposition and increase shelf life almost indefinately. This NC/PE lacquer is viscous and dries rapidly so it only has time to soak into the cotton fibers of the fuse and not the powder core. Can also be used to coat blackmatch, quickmatch, homemade Thermolite Ignitercord, as an electric match overcoat and similar useage. Ship weight is 3 lbs per quart. Note; Many different shades of color may be obtained by thinning with our clear lacquer. Primary colors may be blended to make more colors.

Nitrocellulose, Solid 12.3-12.5% Nitrogen,RS 5.0 to 6.5 sec 4000 series 25% water - [C6H7N3O11] Stock #C163/NCS - FS Shipped as an ORM-D
Shipped moist according to regulations - simply dry and disslove in Acetone, n-butyl acetate or M.E.K. for 'lacquer'. 1 to 1.75oz
NC/qt of Acetone for binder for stars, smoke, igniters, etc.; 3.5oz/qt of
Acetone for thick concentrate. 1 lb makes up to approx 4 gallons of solution. Maximum absorbtion is approx 4.5 to 5.0 oz NC per quart for a jelly-like viscosity. Methanol can be added to both slow evaporation/gelling (extend work time) and lower the solution viscosity. Up to 10% methanol is common practice. The following chart depicts solvents and their corresponding evaporation rates that are uses as nitrocellulose solvents. Legend: Acetone evaporates faster than all; Note, the lacquer viscosity listed is based on 1/2 sec nitrocellulose and not the RS 5.0-6.5 sec NC Firefox supplies. Remember, it takes over twice as much 1/4-1/2 sec NC (by weight) to make the same viscosity lacquer when made using our 5.0-6.5 sec NC 4000 series! Formulation Example: the highest viscosity comes from using N-Butyl Acetate (highest molecular wt), but the downside is that it has the slowest evaporation rate thus taking the longest to dry. Therefore, a combination of acetone and ethyl acetate would yield the best properties and require less nitrocellulose to obtain the desired viscosity and dry time.

Nitrocellulose Lacquers, clear and colors [C6H7N3O11] +[CH3COCH3] 16% butyrate - 5.0-6.5 sec thick concentrated solutions. Our nitrocellulose lacquers are used to seal safety fuse, electric igniters, ignitercord, etc., as well as an excellent pyrotechnic binder for unlimited applications. It burns clean without smoke of its own and does not interfere with color flames or increase ignition points. Completely moistureproof, pliable and dries in seconds. The high solids loadings (16% using 5.0 to 6.5 sec 12% Nitrogen NC, 4000 series) make the slurries very viscous and can be thinned many times for use, depending on application. As an example, »24% NC solids loadings using 5.0 to 6.5 sec NC (listed above) is closer to a gel than a lacquer, taking several days to completely dissolve the NC rather than an hour or two for 16% solids. Other types of NC such as 1/4 sec, make thinner slurries per solids loadings than our 5.0 to 6.5 sec 4000 series. Example; to arrive at the same viscosity as our 16% 5.0 to 6.5 sec slurry, you would need a solids loading of 29% of the 1/4 sec NC and since most commercial NC lacquer slurries incorporate the 1/4 sec NC, be aware of the differences before you choose a supplier. Judge available lacquers by their viscosity and subsequent NC category used rather than the solids loadings. There are differences!! Tie your own flies? This makes an excellent head cement. Hundreds of uses! Compare our prices! Our NC lacquers come in colors as well as clear and are thick concentrate, true »16% solids butyrates 5.0 to 6.5 sec 4000 series (thick syrup) that can be thinned a number of times, at less than half the price of our competition!! **We use acetone only as the solvent. No alcohol is used to thin or cut costs. Methanol may be added to thin and lengthen the drying time slightly if required.
Our NC lacquer is the same concntrate used to coat American made safety fuse, but ours dries a bit faster because we use acetone without any of the slower evaporating solvents such as alcohol or MEK. Adding either of them will thin the lacquer but they also prolong drying time accordingly. If you want a slower drying lacquer but do not want a thinner viscosity to work with, simply add 20% to 30% MEK or Methanol and enough dry NC to bring it back to the desired viscosity. Note; MEK dries faster than methanol.Non-hazmat ORM-D shipping.

Nitroguanidine, (NG) wetted with 20% water, Picrite [CH4N4O2] Stock # C163NG
Crystalline solid in water, mainly used to manufacture propellants, notably triple base smokeless propellants. It has also found application in modern smokeless or low smoke pyrotechnic formulations and as an additive to modify burn rates. Nitroguanidine reduces the propellants flame and flash temps without sacrificing chamber pressures. Relatively of low sensitivity, used as an explosive, it is only detonated with a blasting cap and/or booster explosive and has high detonation velocity. It can also be found in insecticides, having a comparable effect to nicotine. Slightly soluble in alcohol. Although shipped as a flammable solid, according to DOT regulations, wet nitroguanidine is considered an explosive and must be stored in an approved explosives magazine. An ATFE is required to purchase nitroguanidine. Hazmat shipping is also required for any quantity. Add this to your inventory of hard to find exhotic chemicals!

Propylene Glycol, [C3H8O2]; 1,2-propanediol, propane-1,2-diol, a-propylene glycol; - Stock # C175PG
Propylene glycol is a colorless, nearly odorless, clear, viscous liquid with a faintly sweet taste. It is hygroscopic and miscible with water, acetone, ethanol, diethyl ether and chloroform. It is the main ingredient in products such as fog oil for theatrical fog machines and insecticidal smoke fog oil. It can also be used in pyrotechnic smoke mixtures (especially color smoke mixtures) to prevent dyes from "dusting" into the air and provide more smoke density in combustion, and as a dampening agent to control airborn dusts while mixing. Other uses include; mixing with wax and gelatin in the manufacture of paintballs, in smoke machines to make artificial smoke for use in firefighters' training and theatrical productions, as a wetting agent to control drying times of paints and lacquers, in electronic cigarettes, as a vaporizable base for diluting the nicotine liquid, as a non-toxic antifreeze for winterizing drinking water systems in campers and motor homes, septic systems, etc., to de-ice aircraft and airstrips, as a moisturizer in foodstuffs, medicines, cosmetics, as a solvent for food coloring and flavorings, etc..
